Marvin is a US Navy veteran. He came “on board” with Helena Industries (pun intended) while participating in the Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Program. Our Job Placement team began assisting Marvin with locating a work assessment site. A work assessment helps our hardworking team of job coaches evaluate skills and strengths and identify future opportunities for training and improvement to help set people on the right path to achieve their goals.

Marvin’s goal was simple:

Prove to be successful in a full-time work setting and then go to college.

Marvin is a born salesman. Quite a bit of his work history is in car sales. At first, our Placement Team set him up at Helena Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, where he helped get their social media presence off the ground. Marvin accomplished this by listing and selling items on Craigslist and updating posts on Facebook.

However, things didn’t really take off for Marvin until he was placed at Helena College where he worked under the supervision of Matt Schmidt in the Maintenance Department. At Helena College, he did a little bit of everything. He completed safety inspections on both campuses as well as an overall safety plan, which he presented to the Helena College Board. In addition, Marvin did a beautiful job refinishing the podium for graduation!

Marvin’s passion lies with helping others.

Marvin volunteers for Team Proven Grounds at the Helena Indian Alliance. He spends his time working with underprivileged kids, teaching them the sport of boxing while instilling the following traits: self-respect, discipline, and the importance of community service (you can check out their website or LIKE the Helena Indian Alliance on Facebook).

Marvin achieved his goal and beyond! He is now a full-time student at Helena College where he plans to pursue his passion and obtain a degree in social work with a minor in licensed addiction counseling.
