John is a United States Army veteran and a Helena Industries employee. He  agreed to share his story. John was deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan. During his time in the army, he was a Mobile Transportation Operator, responsible for moving troops, equipment, rations, and more. Like many other veterans, after leaving the military, he found it challenging to secure employment to match hisveteran skills and career goals.

Last year, John was connected with the Helena Industries Community Placement Program. Our Community Placement Program connects veterans with meaningful employment and training opportunities to help them achieve both personal and professional goals in the civilian world.

John was placed with Helena Industries’ Big Sky E-Recycling Program to complete a work assessment, a short-term placement that identifies a person’s strengths, interests, and areas of improvement.  In the Big Sky E-Recycling Program, John and other team members, mostly veterans, collect, disassemble, sort, and refurbish old and outdated electronic items. This new HI program creates jobs by keeping electronic waste out of the landfill.

Recently, John successfully completed the VA’s Program, and his short-term work assessment turned into full-time employment at Helena Industries’ Big Sky E-Recycling Program. He chose to continue his work in E-Recycling for a number of reasons, including the continued support he receives from his job coach, Ona, and his work with the Big Sky E-Recycling Program Manager, Ken. Together, Ken and John are studying for A++ certification, which will increase John’s future employability and success.

We believe that everyone has abilities.  It is our goal to create opportunities that provide employment for people today and equip them with the skills and knowledge for workplaces of the future.

We are asking you to support this work by sending a generous contribution. Please choose to help us expand our work with community members and veterans like John, hire qualified and compassionate staff like Ona and Ken, and generate new opportunities to ensure everyone has a chance to succeed.
